Néstor Guijarro Carratalá
Ramon y Cajal Research Professor (University of Alicante)
Prof. Guijarro is a Ramon y Cajal Research Professor at the University of Alicante (Spain), within the Institute of Electrochemistry. Dr. Guijarro completed his PhD (2013) in Materials Science at the University of Alicante under the supervision of Prof. R. Gomez and T. Lana-Villarreal (GFES). Dr. Guijarro’s PhD explored the emerging field of quantum-dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), with a special focus on the synthesis and engineering of novel light harvesting nanocrystals and the characterization of devices using photoelectrochemical and ultrafast spectroscopy techniques (click here for the thesis).

Dr. Guijarro completed his postdoctoral studies at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Laussanne (EPFL, Switzerland) supported with a Marie Curie fellowship (2012) and an Ambizione Energy grant (2016), with Prof. Kevin Sivula (LIMNO Lab). Dr. Guijarro focused on the production of green Hydrogen using photoelectrochemical devices and on the design of novel low-cost photovoltaics.
Overall, Dr. Guijarro’s expertise encompasses (i) the solution-based processing of materials, (ii) the operando characterization of the catalytic intermediates and reactive sites as well as of the photogenerated carrier dynamics and (iii) the fabrication and testing of devices. His main interest is accelerating the electrification of the chemical industry and the permeation of solar energy into society. Prof. Guijarro has been recognized with several awards, including the ERC Starting grant to create a hybrid technology capable of turning biomass into drop-in chemicals.
